Visions and Values

Compassion

We are more willing to grow when we feel safe emotionally. I do my best to take care of my words and actions within the spaces I am leading so that there is room to process new information and also to step away from it. I also ask the students to be compassionate--to themselves and to others--and patient as they challenge themselves.

Candor

Openness and honesty in communication are the first things I bring up when I am teaching. Having an honest dialogue between the student and teacher/choreographer will only benefit the relationship and help both parties get to their maximum potential. Frankness (with yourself and the teacher) is welcome only if compassion is there first. Care first, challenge second.

Clarity

Clarity is important not only in how we communicate but also in how we move through space. I use the word efficiency extensively with my students because as movement and movement pathways get complex, there is no room for extra ideas. Starting with a clear, solid base and then working to get stronger and more explorative is best.

Collaboration

I believe in a yes/and approach. I welcome "mistakes" during the creation and learning process. If something isn't working, asking questions and problem-solving as a community is the best way to achieve a cohesive result.
